Stone wall and feature cleaning and sealing

In short

We clean and seal stone walls and features across Wānaka and the Upper Clutha, from bagged and stacked schist and Ōamaru stone to feature walls and entry pillars. We match the cleaning and the penetrating sealer to the stone, its condition and the finish you want, so the wall looks its best and is protected against water absorption, staining and weathering.

Restore: clean and prepare

Stone walls collect dirt, lichen and other organic growth, efflorescence (white salt deposits) and, on new builds, construction residue. We clean with methods matched to the stone and its mortar, so the surface is ready for sealing. If a mark is permanent, we tell you before you commit.

Protect: penetrating sealing

Our penetrating sealers soak into the stone and mortar, leaving no film. They reduce water absorption, give water-repellent protection for suitable stone and mortar, and allow water vapour to escape. Some sealers keep the stone as it is, and others deepen its colour and bring out its natural features. We show you photos of past walls before you choose, and we talk you through any darkening before we start.

Where sealing works best

Our sealers work by chemical repellency, stopping water being drawn into the stone and mortar by capillary action. On a well-built wall with capping, sound mortar and no other way for water to get in, sealing performs very well and efflorescence is much less likely to return. An occasional run can usually be spot cleaned and resealed.

What we can't seal is what we can't reach. Sealing doesn't fill gaps between stones and mortar, and it can't treat the back of a wall we can't see. Where earth or fill sits behind a wall, such as a bagged schist wall, moisture can move through from behind and efflorescence may keep appearing. We'll tell you this at the assessment.

Maintain

We give you practical maintenance and inspection advice, and sealed walls can be included in an Evercare Club plan.

What this covers

  • Reduces water absorption

  • Allows water vapour to escape

  • Water-repellent protection for suitable stone and mortar

  • Helps reduce recurring efflorescence and water-related staining

  • Practical maintenance and inspection advice

Stone and features we work on

  • Schist walls: bagged, stacked and full masonry

  • Ōamaru stone and limestone walls, pillars and features

  • Stone feature walls and entry pillars

  • Mortar joints

Suitability depends on assessment.

When we do this work

We schedule cleaning and sealing around the condition of the stonework and suitable weather conditions. We advise on timing when we assess your project.
